Popular Nigerian hip-hop artist Davido has sparked rumors about crypto assets after he tweeted about his intention to start a bitcoin trading company. With the short tweet, Davido becomes the latest African celebrity to show an interest in starting a crypto business. Senegalese singer Akon is another prominent African personality embracing crypto assets.
Ahead of the tweet, Davido revealed in October 2020 that he had partnered with Bitsika, a Ghana-based crypto payment company. As part of the agreement with Bitsika, Davido, who has more than 8 million followers on Twitter and Instagram, would promote the crypto company’s app. After the start of this arrangement, reports quickly emerged that the Nigerian singer influence had caused a massive increase in traffic to the Bitsika platform.
Likewise, crypto players in Nigeria expect that from Davido tweet to have a similar effect on that country’s digital assets. This is a view also shared by Chiagozie Iwu, the CEO of Naijacryptos, a crypto exchange. Iwu also believes that “seeing the increasing bitcoin trends in Nigeria” likely prompted Davido to post the tweet.
Meanwhile, Iwu reveals why this tweet could be “hugely up for adoption”, saying:
Crypto influencers in Nigeria have up to 40,000 followers, while Davido has millions of followers across channels.
According to the Naijacryptos boss, this means that more people are likely to see or hear bitcoin via ‘regular ciphers’ than regular crypto influencers.
Meanwhile, some of the singer’s millions of followers on social media seized the excitement that resulted from the post. Some tried to sell their crypto data, while others still turned out to be ignorant.
